Become a Speaker with CYSB

We get a lot of inquiries from speakers who want to work with the Canadian Youth Speakers Bureau, so we’ve put this page together to clearly explain what we do, how it works, and whether applying makes sense for you.

What We Do (and Don’t Do)

In short, working with us means:

We pitch you to our existing youth‑focused clients

We handle the whole sales process, including inquiries, contracting, invoicing, and payment

We act as another lead source for your speaking business

It does not mean:

  • Guaranteed bookings
  • A full calendar
  • That you can stop marketing yourself elsewhere

Many professional speakers operate on a rough rule of thumb: for every 1 booking that comes through a bureau, they personally book 10. That’s normal in this industry.

A speakers bureau works best as part of a bigger picture: it adds opportunities and support, but it isn’t meant to be the entire engine behind your speaking business.

Why Speakers Choose to Work With Us

Speakers who work with CYSB often value that:

  • We already have strong relationships with schools and youth‑serving organizations, so they gain exposure within the youth events space without having to pitch every opportunity themselves
  • We take care of all the admin work, from inquiry to payment, so they don’t have to chase down any cheques.
  • They can tap into guidance from our team when they want support around positioning, stagecraft, or navigating the youth market
  • They become part of a broader network of youth‑focused speakers, creating connection and community in what can otherwise be a solo (& sometimes lonely) profession

Basically, we open doors, handle the logistics, and support you, while you continue to run your own speaking business.

How Our Agreements Work

We offer exclusive and non‑exclusive agreements, depending on the situation.
You’ll see a visual on this page that outlines the difference between the two. In short:

  • Exclusive agreements mean we are your sole representative for all speaking gigs, or for your youth speaking gigs only.
  • Non‑exclusive agreements mean you can continue booking independently, while we also represent you within our network

Neither option is inherently “better”, they just reflect different types of working relationships.
If we move forward together, we’ll talk through the options and help you choose the option that makes the most sense for you.

About the Application Process

We review speaker applications on an ongoing, periodic basis.

Because of the volume we receive, you may not hear back right away, and in some cases, you may not hear back for quite awhile. That’s okay, and it doesn’t mean you’ve been rejected.

We keep strong applications on file and may reach out down the road if an opportunity comes up that feels like a particularly good fit for your experience, topic, or location.

While we aren’t able to provide individual updates or feedback on applications, every submission is reviewed thoughtfully.

Should You Apply?

You’re probably a good fit if:

  • You’re a professional speaker with experience presenting to youth
  • Your content aligns with school and youth‑organization audiences
  • You understand that a bureau is one part of a broader speaking strategy, not a replacement for your own marketing
  • You’d feel good about paying a percentage of your speaking fee as commission for gigs booked by the bureau (and the spin off work that comes from those gigs).

This last point matters more than it might seem. Speakers who thrive in bureau relationships tend to see commission as a fair trade for access, administration, and opportunities, not as a loss of part of their fee.

If you’re on the fence, that’s okay. This page is meant to help you decide before applying.
